Heritage Month gives us a moment to pause and reflect. At African Bank, we inherited a legacy built on a powerful vision – a bank for the people, by the people, serving the people. This vision, created 49 years ago, continues to inspire us today, driving our journey toward financial inclusion and economic empowerment. By looking back on our roots, we’ve been able to push forward with bold strides in growth and innovation.

In fact, several key events have solidified our commitment to innovation and progress:

Our audacious brand renewal

In 2024, we unveiled a fresh look for African Bank. Our new logo represents a bold step into the future, reflecting resilience, innovation, and the audacity that has always defined us. The refresh is part of our ongoing journey through the Excelerate25 strategy, launched in 2021. Our updated logo encapsulates the rich heritage of African Bank, from its audacious beginnings in 1975 to its current status as a symbol of financial empowerment.

Launch of our new clothing collection

We proudly introduced our striking new clothing range for frontline staff, designed in collaboration with renowned fashion brand Khosi Nkosi. This collection artfully incorporates our unique brand patterns and shapes, blending professional attire with cultural expression. It’s more than just a uniform – it represents our commitment to embracing heritage while moving confidently into the future.

Return to profitability

In 2024, we marked a significant milestone: a return to profitability in our consolidated, unaudited interim financial results for the half-year ended 31 March 2024. This achievement keeps us on track for our Initial Public Offering (IPO) goal and reaffirms our Excelerate25 strategy, ensuring sustainable growth for the future.

While we celebrate these milestones, we also honour the legacy of one of African Bank’s greatest pioneers: Dr. Sam Motsuenyane. Dr. Motsuenyane, who passed away at the age of 97, was the visionary founder and chair of African Bank. His leadership in establishing South Africa’s first Black-owned bank serves as an enduring inspiration. The audacity he displayed in defying the odds and empowering our people reflects the values of leadership, innovation and empathy that we continue to uphold today.  We honour his legacy every day by working to ensure that African Bank remains a bank for the people, by the people
