The countdown to the 2024 African Bank Soweto Marathon has begun, and nobody is more thrilled than our African Bank Runners Club!

We spoke to our African Bankers, Lucas Maseko, Mduduzi Mhlabathi, Agripa Phama, Kagiso Mbelu, and Boitumelo Mpete, who will run The People’s Race on the 3rd of November and they provided insight into their training programmes, nutrition plans, and how they stay motivated.

Here are the top 5 tips they swear by to achieve marathon success

Start slow

Begin with shorter distances and gradually increase your mileage. This helps your body adapt and reduces the risk of injury. Incorporate rest days to allow for recovery.

Follow a training plan

Use a structured training plan tailored to your fitness level. Plans typically include a mix of long runs, speed work, and rest days. Consistency is key to building endurance and strength.

Focus on nutrition and hydration

Proper nutrition and hydration are crucial. Eat a balanced diet rich in carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. Drink plenty of water throughout the day and during your runs.

Stick to what you know

Avoid trying new training methods as race day approaches. Instead, follow the training programme that has worked for you. In addition, slow down your training programme as you get closer to race day.

Set targets

Set up a weekly training target and commit to achieving it. For example, if you goal is to run 40km in a week, make sure you stick to that goal and ensure that you meet it within the time frame that you have given yourself.

It takes courage, determination, and lots of training to take on a race of this magnitude. We believe anything is possible when you have the audacity to believe in your dreams. We wish our audacious runners the best when they run “The People’s Race” on the 3rd of November!
