The story of Africanbank is a story of audacity. The vision of a bank for the people, by the people, serving the people, was born in 1964, at a time when black South Africans were marginalized and denied access to essential financial services. Our founders, pioneers like Dr. Sam Motsuenyane, Dr Richard Maponya, and Epainette Mbeki, were visionaries! At the inaugural meeting of the National African Federated Chamber of Commerce (NAFCOC), they resolved to find a solution to the lack of funding opportunities that were available to black business owners. That solution was Africanbank! At that very meeting, they dug into their pockets and raised R70 as the first downpayment for their project.
